The MODIS instrument that flies aboard NASA's Aqua and Terra satellites provide some of the most clear and stunning imagery of tropical cyclones, and captured a visible image of Category 2 hurricane Miriam off the western coast of Mexico.
MODIS stands for the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer. Terra's MODIS and Aqua's MODIS view the entire Earth's surface every 1 to 2 days, acquiring data in 36 spectral bands, or groups of wavelengths. NASA's Aqua satellite flew over Hurricane Miriam on Sept. 24 at 21:00 UTC and the MODIS instrument captured a visible image of Hurricane Miriam off Mexico's west coast. The MODIS image showed that Miriam's eye was covered by high clouds, yet the eye is still about 30 nautical miles wide. Cloud top temperatures around the eye have cooled in infrared imagery, which indicates thunderstorms around the eye still have strong uplift and are shooting high into the troposphere.
On Sept. 25 at 5 a.m. EDT Hurricane Miriam's maximum sustained winds were near 105 mph (165 kmh), making it a category 2 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson hurricane scale. Miriam 's hurricane-force winds extend only 30 miles (45 km) from the center. Slow weakening is forecast during the next 48 hours, according to the National Hurricane Center.
Miriam's center was located near latitude 18.7 north and longitude 114.3 west. Miriam is moving in a northwesterly direction near 6 mph (9 kmh) and is expected to turn to the north-northwest later on Sept. 25, followed by a turn to the north. Miriam's estimated minimum central pressure is 968 millibars.
Although Miriam is off-shore, the hurricane is producing very rough seas along the south and western coasts of the central Baja Peninsula, and those conditions will continue for the next several days.

Thousands of American Airlines (AAMRQ) passengers received bad news last week. The airline cancelled hundreds of scheduled flights ? many at a moment's notice.
American said its planes were grounded because of aircraft maintenance concerns and a high number of pilots calling out sick. According to American, pilots' "sick leave usage has been running higher than historical norms" and maintenance write-ups "have covered items such as torn seat pockets, frayed seat belts and malfunctioning coffee machines and passenger reading lights."
American Spokesman Bruce Hicks told The Wall Street Journal that management has "seen unprecedented pilot maintenance write-ups, many at the time of scheduled departure, which is having an impact on our operations" in the past two weeks.
AMR Corp., the parent company of American and the regional American Eagle division, cut more than 300 departures or a little more than 1 percent of its scheduled flights between Sept. 18 and Sept. 23. The Allied Pilots Association (APA), the union that represents American's 10,000 pilots, rejected claims that there was a concerted effort by the pilots to disrupt air travel by planning a sickout.

"American Airlines pilots are trained professionals who are responsible for flying their passengers safely around the world every day," said APA President Keith Wilson said in a press release. "The list of unresolved maintenance issues grows every day on each of the aging aircraft we operate, and we can't ignore serious maintenance issues that could easily turn into safety risks. Our pilots will not compromise safety, ever. Understandably, our pilots are taking a prudent and cautious approach in their operational decision-making process."
The fraught relationship between American Airlines and its pilots intensified last November when the nation's No. 3 carrier entered Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. American ended its contract with the pilots union after a U.S. bankruptcy judge ruled earlier this month that the company could seek new employment terms.
American's push to reduce its labor costs and minimize its overall financial obligations has amplified as the company attempts to emerge from bankruptcy protection at the end of this year. American's cost-cutting plans could include slashing nearly 11,000 workers. The pilots union has yet to reach a new agreement with American management unlike the other unions in the airline industry.

American also said it was reducing its flight schedule by 2 percent in October, a move that underscores the tension between American executives and pilots. Barbara Peterson, senior aviation correspondent at Conde Nast Traveler, says she suspects the pilots are orchestrating the flight delays and cancellations.
"Something is going on," she says in an interview with The Daily Ticker. "Pilots have been the most vociferous about their unhappiness with the airline and the company. They feel like they've had to give up a lot in recent years. Pilots are doing this to hurt the company so the company will come back to the bargaining table."
Peterson does not believe American will leave bankruptcy protection until it reaches an agreement with the pilots. The relationship between the two parties has become so strained, the pilots union has even publicly expressed their support for a merger with US Airways, an unusual alliance says Peterson.
"Unions usually do not support mergers," she notes. But the pilots "think they'll get a better deal" if two airlines joined forces.

Consumers may want to avoid booking flights with American in the near term but that idea could backfire, Peterson says. American desperately needs the business and the number of available flights has fallen as all airlines cut capacity, making it difficult to avoid American completely. She has not seen a big outcry from American passengers over the past few days but that could quickly change if American's problems persist. Customer complaints about air travel in July totaled 2,466 -- double the number from July 2011, according to Peterson.
American Airlines posted these travel advisories to passengers stranded at its terminals for more than two hours:
Receive a full refund if you decide not to travel
Reaccommodate on another carrier if available
Change your American flight plans at no charge
Tell us what you think! Are you going to book your next flight on American?

Mei Xiang, the mother of the baby panda who died Sunday.
By Associated Press
The giant panda cub born a week ago at the National Zoo in Washington has died, and it was not immediately known why the animal died, zoo officials said Sunday.?
Zoo officials said in a press release that the cub was found dead Sunday morning after panda keepers heard sounds of distress from its mother, Mei Xiang.
Staffers were able to retrieve the cub about an hour later. The cub appeared to be in good condition, and there were no outward signs of trauma or infection.
The cub had been a surprise at the zoo. Fourteen-year-old Mei Xiang had five failed pregnancies before giving birth, and only one panda cub has survived at the zoo in the past.
Panda cubs are born about the size of a stick of butter and are delicate infants. Panda mothers are about 1,000 times heavier than their cubs, which are born with their eyes closed. The delicate cubs have died in the past when accidentally crushed by mom. That happened in two different zoos in China in 2009 and 2010 when mothers killed their young while attempting to nurse.
The zoo's first panda couple, Ling Ling and Hsing Hsing, arrived from China in 1972 and had five cubs during the 1980s, but none lived more than a few days. One of the cubs was stillborn, two others died of pneumonia within a day, another died from lack of oxygen after birth, and the final cub died of an infection after four days.
Panda experts have said the first weeks of life are critical for the panda cubs as mothers have to make sure they stay warm and get enough to eat.
"It's kind of a nerve-racking period for the folks that are monitoring mom and cub," Rebecca Snyder, the curator of mammals at Atlanta's zoo, said last week. Atlanta is one of only two other American zoos to have had cubs.
Atlanta has had three cubs, and the San Diego zoo has had six, including a cub born this year. A panda couple in Memphis has yet to have a cub, despite several tries. No other U.S. zoos have pandas.
The cub had not yet been named in accordance with Chinese tradition ? it was to receive a name after 100 days on Dec. 24. Had the cub survived until then, it would have been roughly the size of a loaf of bread and weighed around 10 pounds.

Before joining Microsoft I have experienced life working for a local authority and also the Environment Agency so environmental regulations are no stranger to me. There are hundreds, nay thousands of them (including 1000 pieces of legislation, 2000 guidance documents, and 250 reporting requirements) so things can get a bit complex for those being regulated and even the regulators themselves.
But without these sometimes complicated but vital rules placed on our organisations, this country would be in a very tragic environmental state indeed.
So, like all aspects of government recently it seems, a review is needed to work out smarter ways of making regulation easier to understand, easier to adopt and easier to find information about.
To tackle the nitty gritty of the regulations review, a panel debate was called by the Aldersgate Group (an alliance of leaders from a wide range of UK organisations who drive action for a sustainable economy) and Defra. Hosted by Microsoft at our Cardinal Place offices in London, a packed room full of folks from business, politics and society listened intently to thoughts from the panel which included:
Paul Leinster, Chief Executive, Environment Agency
Sonia Phippard, Director, Defra
Hugh Milward, Director for Citizenship and Corporate Affairs, Microsoft
Etienne Pollard, Deputy Director, Government Digital Service
Robert Hunt, Executive Director, Veolia
Peter Young, Chairman, Aldersgate Group (Chair)
The event only lasted for a couple of hours but quite a few excellent points were addressed by the panel. The background to this subject was laid out beautifully by Environment Agency Chief Exec Paul Leinster stating that there was ?a tremendous internal drive to improve? in his organisation, that they ?must reduce bueuracracy? and ?we must make it easier for those who are being regulated? to find important information.
A large portion of a successful revision of environmental regulations and the way they are communicated hangs around how accessible they are online. Etienne Pollard, Deputy Director of the Government Digital Service, explained how the new gov.uk website will be replacing the direct.gov and Business Link websites in October to make one easier to manage and use single platform.
So what makes this revision of environmental regulations different to past reviews? According to Sonia Phippard from Defra, the answer is easy ? ?this has been a comprehensive exercise unlike before? and ?some of the IT opportunities are different?. ?There is the opportunity to deliver a different type of service due to technology which didn?t exist until recently? she said.
On the subject of IT advances, the cloud obviously offers potentially great cost savings and provide more topical benefits for businesses. As Microsoft?s new Director for Citizenship and Corporate Affairs, Hugh Milward suggested: ?Cloud solutions can help companies meet environment regulations, by off-siting storage and processing.? But at the moment, cloud providers are being hammered for the resulting carbon increases, even though there is a system-wide reduction. It's a real barrier for cloud providers.?.
Microsoft itself has announced that it is committed to becoming carbon neutral as soon as possible. And these environmental considerations are reflected on the software side too with the new Windows 8 using 30% less energy than Windows XP.
So what about the future for this review? What?s the next step? Well, by the sounds of things, the government are open to helpful ideas and suggestions from everyone. They have a way forward and that direction is using common sense and advances in IT to bring about this new generation in environmental regulations. Certainly things are going to get much easier to find regulatory information and underpinning some of this development will probably be the cloud in some form.

There are a number of social media sites to use for your marketing endeavors, each with benefits and drawbacks. For all the businesses that recognize the effectiveness of marketing with social media, there are yet more marketers who haven?t explored it to its full potential. This article can show you some different ways you can be a success with social media marketing.
Anytime you post on Twitter, make sure a tag is added on. Tags go after the # symbol and allow your feed entries to appear for users that have joined certain groups. Think carefully about your tag use. Identify specific groups that your intended demographic probably follows.
When planning your social media marketing strategy, be aware that people yearn to be heard, and want validation that you are paying attention. Other customers may have the same question as the one posted. Make changes if it seems like the majority of your customers, followers or users are requesting a specific alteration.
TIP! As you?ve surely seen ads on Facebook and other such social media, they often contain interesting photoshopped pictures. It is a clever idea to use such intriguing images because this will draw the possible buyer to your ad.
Make others feel that you have expertise in your field by helping people online as well as on social media pages. More and more people will come to you if you are prepared to do this. To get the ball rolling, you should start by seeking out people who need help with their social sites. If you have the answers, you can build a solid base. This will help to increase your overall client base.
Don?t expect your social media presence to generate tons of followers and likes in a very short time. People should trust what you?re doing and whatever it is you are trying to sell. Just be patient and work on gaining the trust and loyalty of one user at a time. After a while, you will see your customer list begin to grow.
TIP! If you have followers on Twitter, follow those people back. Don?t ever give your clientele the impression that you are above them.
You may want to either write a blog for someone else?s site or let someone else write a guest blog on yours. Either way, you can generate more traffic. Be certain your guest blogging agreements include provisions for back links back to your website. Also, afford your guest bloggers a similar courtesy. People who read the blog are more apt to check out your posts and your sites, too.
If you have a Facebook page, you should really implement a review page to increase your credibility. This widget makes it easy for anyone following you to review your business. You will be able to edit these reviews and remove the ones you do not like. One good way to encourage your readers to create reviews is to run a contest.
Your profits will improve when you can find easy ways to allow your customers to share your content within their social network. You should be sure that you place a Facebook share button on your posts. It does take a small amount of time and effort, but the results can be well worth it.
TIP! When using social media to market your company?s products or services, make sure that you provide some incentives, but don?t be pushy. People don?t want to be forced into buying something.
The number of businesses using social networking to connect with consumers is steadily growing. It?s becoming more and more important for other businesses to try this strategy as well. If you do not utilize social media in your marketing, it is unlikely that you will be able to maximize profits. So when it?s time to beef up your social media presence online, don?t be afraid to use these tips to help you get
Singer Fiona Apple, who was arrested Wednesday in Texas for possession of hashish and marijuana, was released from jail Thursday after posting a $10,000 bond, the Hudspeth County Sheriff's Office said in a statement.
Hudspeth County Sheriff's Office
According to the sheriff's office, Apple's tour bus came through a border-patrol checkpoint Wednesday night at 8 p.m. CT. During a routine citizenship check, a border-patrol canine detected the presence of controlled substances and the dog found hashish and marijuana in a blue backpack.
Apple admitted the substances were hers, and was taken to jail Wednesday night.
A concert Apple was scheduled to play Thursday night at the Moody Theater in Austin, Texas, has been postponed. A theater spokeswoman told TODAY.com she expects to announce the new date within 24 hours.
The hashtag #FreeFiona?started trending on Twitter Thursday afternoon, with fans showing support for the singer.
"So what jail are we all mailing apples to again?" wrote Maura Johnston.
Others felt Apple should have known better.?Wrote Baeblemusic, "Is anyone else confused by all the?#freefiona?battle cries? She broke the law, it's not like she's being wrongfully occupied by China."
Apple is far from the only singer to spend time in the Hudspeth County Jail for drug charges. The Huffington Post reports?that Willie Nelson, Snoop Dogg and actor Armie Hammer are among those who have been arrested at a nearby border-patrol checkpoint. According to the Huffington Post, "drug-sniffing dogs inspect more than 17,000 trucks, travelers and tour buses daily" at the checkpoint.
At least one Twitter fan felt the region's reputation should have preceded it. Tweeted Jason Cohen, "Don't they teach people about Sierra Blanca at road manager school?"

The seeds of greenhouse-grown corn could hold the key to treating a rare, life-threatening childhood genetic disease, according to researchers from Simon Fraser University.
SFU biologist Allison Kermode and her team have been carrying out multidisciplinary research toward developing enzyme therapeutics for lysosomal storage diseases - rare, but devastating childhood genetic diseases for more than a decade.
In the most severe forms of these inherited diseases, untreated patients die in early childhood because of progressive damage to all organs of the body.
Currently, enzyme treatments are available for only six of the more than 70 diverse types of lysosomal storage diseases.
"In part because mammalian cell cultures have been the system of choice to produce these therapeutics, the enzymes are extremely costly to make, with treatments typically ranging from $300,000 to $500,000 per year for children, with even higher costs for adults," says Kermode, noting the strain on healthcare budgets in Canada and other countries is becoming an issue.
Greenhouse-grown maize may become a platform for making alpha-L-iduronidase, an enzyme used to treat the lysosomal storage disease known as mucopolysaccharidosis I, according to research published in this week's Nature Communications.
The findings could ultimately change how these enzyme therapeutics are made, and substantially reduce the costs of treating patients. The novel technology manipulates processes inside the maize seed that "traffick" messenger RNAs to certain parts of the cell as a means of controlling the subsequent sugar processing of the therapeutic protein.
In this way, the researchers have been able to produce the enzyme drug in maize seeds. The product could ultimately be used as a disease therapeutic, although it is still "early days," says Kermode, and several research goals remain to be accomplished before this can become a reality.
Kermode says the success of the work underscores the power of multidisciplinary research that included contributions from SFU chemistry professor David Vocadlo, and from UBC Medical Genetics professor Lorne Clarke. It further underscores the importance of connections between SFU and Australia's Griffith University, through collaborative researchers Mark von Itzstein and Thomas Haselhorst.
"In 2005, we had the basis of our story worked out," says Kermode. "Taking it to the next level involved their precise analyses to determine the sugar residues on the therapeutic enzyme produced by the modified maize seeds.
"When we first looked at the sugar analysis data we were amazed at how well the 'mRNA-trafficking strategy' had worked, and the high fidelity of the process for controlling the sugar-processing of the therapeutic protein. This is critical as sugar processing influences the characteristics of a protein (enzyme) therapeutic, including its safety, quality, half-life in the bloodstream, and efficacy. The work could well extend to forming a platform for the production of other protein therapeutics."
Kermode also credits SFU research associate Xu He, the first author of the Nature Communications paper. Her funding sources included NSERC Strategic grants and a Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research Senior Scholar Award, and in related research, a Canadian Society for Mucopolysaccharide and Related Diseases grant.

The space shuttle Endeavour took off atop a modified transport plane from a Houston airport Thursday, beginning its journey to retirement in California, where it will be put on permanent display in a museum.
Endeavour, riding piggyback atop a modified Boeing 747 jumbo jet, took off from Ellington Field in Houston at 7:03 a.m. CDT (8:03 a.m. EDT/1203 GMT) and is headed for NASA's Dryden Flight Research Facility in Southern California later today, its final pit stop before arriving in Los Angeles on Friday. The shuttle left its Florida home port at NASA's Kennedy Space Center on Wednesday to kick off the three-day trip, which is NASA's final space shuttle ferry flight.
Today, Endeavour and its carrier plane, called the Shuttle Carrier Aircraft, will soar over Austin and refuel at Biggs Army Base in El Paso, Texas, before continuing west toward California. On the way, they will fly over White Sands Test Facility near Las Cruces, N.M., (a backup shuttle landing site) and Tucson, Ariz. (home of retired astronaut Mark Kelly, Endeavour's last commander), before arriving at Dryden at 12 p.m. PDT (3 p.m. EDT/1900 GMT). [Photos of Shuttle Endeavour's Final Ferry Flight]
NASA will broadcast Endeavour's arrival at Dryden live on NASA TV and via an online webcast. Find out?how to watch Endeavour land live here.
"Space shuttle Endeavour's final ferry flight has in a way become a traveling museum, an early start to its exhibit at the California Science Center," said Robert Pearlman, editor of the memorabilia and?space history website collectSPACE.com, a SPACE.com partner and contributor. "So many people are getting a chance to see the shuttle up close ? and atop the jumbo jet Shuttle Carrier Aircraft to boot! ??that you can't help but wish the flight wouldn't end Friday in Los Angeles."
Thousands of onlookers watched Endeavour leave Florida as the shuttle flew over the state's Space Coast one last time. In Houston, the home to NASA's Johnson Space Center that houses the shuttle program's Mission Control room and astronaut training center, Endeavour's stopover was a welcome sight.
"Perhaps most poignantly, Endeavour's delivery along the southern half the U.S. has offered the opportunity to pay tribute to the workers who made NASA's space shuttle program a success," Pearlman said. "The stopover in Houston gave thousands at the Johnson Space Center an opportunity to say one last farewell to the vehicle and program they led for 30 years."
Endeavour is NASA's youngest space shuttle?and destined for public display at the California Science Center, its final retirement home now that NASA's orbiter fleet is retired. It made its first flight in 1992 and final flight in May and June of 2011. In all, Endeavour flew 25 space missions.
The flight to California is a homecoming of sorts for Endeavour. The shuttle, along with NASA's other orbiters, was built in Downey by aerospace company Rockwell International, which ultimately became part of Boeing, to replace the orbiter lost in the tragic Challenger shuttle accident of January 1986.
On Wednesday, Kelly said he hoped Endeavour's ferry flight would fly over Tucson so he and his wife Gabrielle Giffords, the former Arizona Congresswoman, would have a chance to see it in flight. Kelly said he also hopes to see Endeavour parade along the streets of Los Angeles when it moves from the Los Angeles International Airport to the science center in mid-October.
Endeavour is the third of the four?NASA space shuttles?heading to museums this year. The shuttle Discovery was placed on display at the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum's Stephen F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Va., in April, with NASA's Enterprise shuttle prototype going on display in New York City's Intrepid Air and Space Museum in July.
The shuttle Atlantis, meanwhile, remains at the Kennedy Space Center and will be delivered to the nearby Kennedy Space Center Visitors Complex on Nov. 2. Atlantis' public exhibit will open in summer 2013.
NASA retired its space shuttle program in 2011 after 30 years of spaceflight and 135 space missions. The space agency plans to use commercial spacecraft to ferry astronauts to and from low-Earth orbit while developing its own new spacecraft and rockets for deep-space exploration.

Feeding Responses of Pacific Snappers (genus Lutjanus) to the Yellow-bellied Sea Snake (Pelamis platurus) : Behavior Biology - BioStor
ZOOLOGICAL SCIENCE 5: 443-448 (1988) ? 1988 Zoological Society of Japan Feeding Responses of Pacific Snappers (genus Lutjanus) to the Yellow-bellied Sea Snake (Pelamis platurus) Paul J. Weldon Department of Biology, Texas A & M University, College Station, TX 77843, U.S.A. ABSTRACT ? Previous studies indicate that Pacific fishes refuse to attack the yellow-bellied sea snake (Pelamis platurus). Visual and non-visual cues are thought to be used to identify this snake. Three species of Pacific snappers -Lutjanus aratus, L. argentiventris, and L. guttatus -were tested for reactions to pieces or extracts of P. platurus. Snappers presented with carcass pieces of a variety of stimulus animals regurgitated P. platurus more than others; one experiment was inconclusive. Snappers presented in darkness with pieces of stimulus animals attached to clips removed fewer P. platurus pieces than those of other species. Pieces of P. platurus skin were regurgitated more frequently, and removed from clips less frequently, than were pieces of skinned carcass or control animals. Large pieces (5.0 g) of P. platurus were regurgitated and rejected more often than were small pieces (1.3 g). Snappers regurgitated and rejected fish pieces treated with a chloroform: methanol extract of P. platurus more than pieces treated with solvent alone. This study indicates that snappers detect chemicals from this snake. INTRODUCTION The yellow-bellied sea snake (Pelamis platurus) is found from the west coast of Central America to the east coast of Africa [1]. Although predation pressure in tropical Pacific waters is notoriously intense [2], no species has been observed to eat this highly venomous, pelagic serpent. A couple of presumed predators (rather than scavengers) have regurgitated P. platurus [3, 4], but stomach con- tent analyses of a variety of predatory fishes -457 fishes representing 25 species from Panama [1], 186 dolphins (Stenella spp.) and 79 tuna (Thunnus albacores) from the eastern Pacific [5], approx- imately 1000 sharks (mostly Carcharhinus falcifor- mis) from Baja California to Costa Rica (S. Kato, pers. comm.), and thousands of sharks from around Australia [6, 7] -failed to indicate this snake's remains. Heatwole [6] inspected 19 species of marine snakes in Australian waters for pre- dator-induced injuries and found that P. platurus was the only amply represented species that lacked any sign of attacks by fishes. Wounds in P. Accepted October 20, 1987 Received February 26, 1987 platurus from the eastern Pacific have been documented, but at least some of these appear to be man-made rather than caused by would-be predators [8]. Observations of the reactions of birds and predatory fishes to P. platurus indicate that this snake is avoided. Naive herons and egrets in Panama presented with several eels, a terrestrial snake, and P. platurus fled only from the latter [9]. A variety of teleost and elasmobranch fishes refused to attack P. platurus or regurgitated pieces of this snake if they were ingested [10]. The cues by which potential predators recognize sea snakes have not been studied systematically, but several authors suggest that the conspicuous yellow (ventral) and black (dorsal) coloration of P. platurus acts as an aposematic signal [1,6, 10, 11]. Rubinoff and Kropach [10] state that other cues also may be involved since snake pieces were rejected by Pacific fishes even after the snakes' color patterns had been modified with marking pens, when snakes were skinned, and when snake pieces were wrapped in squid flesh. Rubinoff and Kropach [10] suggest that fishes identify snakes by chemical cues. This study examines the feeding reactions of

Allan Pinkerton of the Secret Service on the Antietam battlefield in 1862.
Alexander Gardner/Library of Congress.
A misty rain shrouded Antietam Creek as Pvt. David L. Thompson and other footsore soldiers from the 9th New York Infantry took their places on the Union line and unrolled their blankets. It was Sept. 16, 1862, a night marked by the sputtering fire of nervous pickets, the cursing of men tripping over objects in the dark (including a regimental dog), and waves of panic.
?We sat down and watched for a while the dull glare on the sky of the Confederate campfires behind the hills,? Thompson wrote. ?We were hungry, of course, but as no fires were allowed, we could only mix our ground coffee and sugar in our hands and eat them dry. ... There was something weirdly impressive yet unreal in the gradual drawing together of those whispering armies under cover of the night?something of awe and dread.?
Two great armies were steeling themselves for what would become the deadliest one-day battle in American history. That 12-hour fight would change the course of the war, determine the fate of 4 million slaves and shock the public. Thanks to some of the first?and still most haunting?battlefield photographs in history, people would see the reality of the fratricide that until then had been a distant abstraction.
North and South fought in the open at close quarters?usually no more than 300 yards apart?with no protective earthworks to soften the blows. Gen. Robert E. Lee, leading thousands of tattered, battle-hardened Confederate troops into enemy territory for the first time, tried for a desperate knockout punch that would bring the two-year-old conflict to a swift conclusion. Maj. Gen. George B. McClellan, charged with fending off the Confederate invasion threatening the capital in Washington, summoned the largest army yet to face Lee?s forces and tried to pin his adversary at Antietam, with the Potomac River at Lee?s back.
The clash was one of the worst days in a long war known for its carnage. Because the literacy rate in both armies was quite high?above 90 percent?the survivors wrote letters and diaries detailing their experiences, and we have an excellent record of what transpired at Antietam. Time has softened the horror, but even today the photographs and remembrances of those who were there offer a glimpse of a national tragedy written in smoke and blood.
The morning of Sept. 17 opened with a tremendous crash as opposing batteries traded blows across the creek. Maj. Gen. Joseph ?Fighting Joe? Hooker and some 8,600 men of the Union First Corps came boiling out of the woods about 6 a.m. and headed for Dunker Church. The squat white building marked the northern end of the Confederate line, held by Maj. Gen. Stonewall Jackson?s troops. ?The Federals in apparent double battle line were moving toward us at charge bayonets, common time,? wrote a veteran of the Stonewall Brigade, ?and the sunbeams falling on their well-polished guns and bayonets gave a glamour and a show at once fearful and entrancing.?
To reach the church, Hooker?s troops had to cross open ground, plunge into a thickly planted cornfield and emerge on the far side. But the cornfield erupted in a torrent of fire from Confederates hidden among the stalks.
As the first of Hooker?s troops fell in the corn, others poured in to replace them, scrambling around the dead and driving for the church. ?Men, I can not say fell; they were knocked out of the ranks by dozens,? wrote Maj. Rufus Dawes of the 6th Wisconsin Regiment. ?But we jumped over the fence, and pushed on, loading, firing and shouting as we advanced. There was, on the part of the men, great hysterical excitement, eagerness to go forward and a reckless disregard of life.? They pursued Jackson?s troops toward Hagerstown Pike, riddling them from behind as the Confederates tried to clamber over the roadside fences.
To stiffen his lines, Jackson summoned Brig. Gen. John Bell Hood?s troops, who were cooking the first hot meal they had eaten in days. Hood?s men put their bread aside, took up muskets, and streaked toward the battle, screeching as they went. ?I have never seen a more disgusted bunch of boys and mad as hornets,? a soldier from Hood?s 2,300-man division recalled. The hungry Rebels smashed into Hooker?s forces, mowing down Union troops ?like a scythe running through our line,? one Federal survivor wrote. Surging across the cornfield, Hood?s counterattack regained most of the bloody ground lost earlier that morning?with more than 60 percent of his men dead, wounded, or missing. When Hood returned from the front, trailed by a remnant of his command, someone asked where his troops were. ?Dead on the field,? he said.
Two other Union corps fed fresh soldiers into the fight as Lee desperately stripped other parts of his line to meet each new thrust. By 10 a.m., the cornfield had changed hands 15 times. ?Every stalk of corn in the greater part of the field was cut as closely as could have been done with a knife,? Hooker recalled, ?and the slain lay in rows precisely as they had stood in their ranks a few moments before.? Riding among his men on a big gray horse, the general made an easy target. He was shot in the foot and put out of action that morning.
He was one of almost 10,000 casualties from the opening hours of fighting; another was a recent Harvard graduate, Capt. Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. of the 20th Massachusetts, shot through the neck and left for dead on the field. Holmes recovered, finished the war with distinction, and became a Supreme Court justice. But he admitted that after Antietam, ?the world never seemed quite right again.?
