Genesys research finds big business still uneasy with Customer ...

Aug 30, 2012 ? Research conducted by Genesys, an expert in customer experience solutions, found that many consumer-facing Fortune 500 companies shy away from listing social media as a means for customers to contact them. More than half (55 percent) of consumer-facing Fortune 500 businesses do not provide their Twitter handles on the ?Contact Us? page of their websites. Additionally, despite the fact that Facebook has 900 million users across the world; half of these businesses (51 percent) do not provide a link to their Facebook profile on the ?Contact Us? page.

The research also uncovered that corporations suffer from e-mail aversion, with nine out of ten failing to list an e-mail address on their contact page. Instead, 83 percent of companies include a contact form, often off-putting to consumers and seen as a ?black-hole.?

  • More than half of consumer-facing Fortune 500 Corporations suffer from social shyness with 55 percent of consumer facing corporations failing to list a Twitter handle on their ?Contact Us? page, and 51 percent failing to list a Facebook page.
  • 27 percent of consumer-facing Fortune 500 corporations do not list social media channels on their website homepage.
  • 89 percent of those same companies do not list an e-mail address on their site.
  • 13 percent of companies do not list a phone number on their ?Contact Us? page.

The findings are based on Genesys analysis of consumer-facing Fortune 500 companies? websites. Consumer-facing company websites were defined as those which a consumer would visit to obtain answers or assistance regarding a product or service.

?These findings are an indication that social media is still a very new phenomenon,? explained Tom Eggemeier, head of Global Sales at Genesys. ?Many large consumer-facing companies are still struggling and not confident in their ability to deal with customer queries and complaints via social media. Consumer-facing companies need to resolve this disconnect by developing a customer service strategy that understands and integrates social media channels across every customer touch point.?

(AP) ? Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney will focus on veterans' issues with a Wednesday speech to the American Legion as speakers at the GOP convention address defense and foreign affairs.

The Republican nominee is making a day-trip detour to Indiana to speak to the veterans' service organization as the convention here continues. Sen. John McCain ? nominated four years ago only to lose to Democrat Barack Obama ? will address delegates Wednesday evening, as will former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

Romney, a former Massachusetts governor, had planned to address the convention from Indianapolis by video hook-up in conjunction with McCain, a Navy veteran and former prisoner of war. But campaign officials said Wednesday that that address had been scrapped, and that Romney would return to Tampa instead of spending the night in Indiana.

The convention schedule ? and Romney's plans ? promise a focus on foreign affairs before Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan, Romney's running mate, addresses the gathering Wednesday night. Aides say Romney also will touch on foreign policy in convention speech Thursday night.

The former Massachusetts governor, officially nominated Tuesday, is looking to burnish his credentials as a plausible commander in chief.

He's getting backing from Rice, who speaks at the convention Wednesday night.

She told "CBS This Morning" that Romney "would understand American exceptionalism and would not be afraid to lead from the front."

Rice said the Nov. 6 election is about "the future of American leadership" in the world. She said U.S. policy on Syria has been ineffective. Asked what she thinks Obama has done wrong, the former Bush administration official said Washington has been losing influence around the world because Obama has repeatedly demanded that Syrian President Bashar Assad step aside and nothing has happened.

McCain is set to speak at 8 p.m. Eastern time, followed hours later by Rice.

In an interview Tuesday, McCain said he was glad to have a role in Romney's convention, however small.

"It's not my show," the five-term Arizona senator said. "I'm just grateful they asked me to speak."

Shifty, but secure eyes: New biometric security system

ScienceDaily (Aug. 29, 2012) ? A biometric security system based on how a user moves their eyes is being developed by technologists in Finland. Writing in the International Journal of Biometrics, the team explains how a person's saccades, their tiny, but rapid, involuntary eye movements, can be measured using a video camera. The pattern of saccades is as unique as an iris or fingerprint scan but easier to record and so could provide an alternative secure biometric identification technology.

Martti Juhola of the University of Tampere and colleagues point out that fingerprint and face recognition are perhaps the most usual biometric means to verify identity for secure access to buildings and computer resources and even at international borders. Other techniques such as iris scanning are also occasionally used in some circumstances. The most obvious disadvantage of such biometrics is that they might be forged through the use of an image or prosthetic.

The team points out that the advent of high-quality video cameras and web cameras means that a dynamic biometric, such as monitoring eye movements is now viable. It would be much more difficult to spoof an individual's pattern of saccades than to emulate their iris with contact lenses or their fingerprints with patterned silicone pads other means.

The team has studied otoneurological eye movements for several years and has recognized that certain statistical values that can be extracted from the data for such movements are, in combination, unique for each of us. "Saccades are probably the simplest eye movements to detect with signal analysis," the team says. They are the fastest eye movements and very easy to trigger by asking an individual to look at one target and then another on a computer screen, for instance the team explains.

Preliminary tests suggest that a verification could be undertaken in as little as 30 seconds as 30-40 saccades are recorded, giving accuracy of 90% or even close to 100% at its best, the team says.

Jailed ex-PM Tymoshenko loses Ukraine appeal

Ukraine on Wednesday rejected jailed ex-premier Yulia Tymoshenko's appeal of her abuse of power conviction despite threats of estrangement from Western powers that view the case as political revenge.

About 500 supporters of the 2004 Orange Revolution leader rallied in the 51-year-old's defence as Ukraine's highest appeals authority agreed that she had no authority to seal a controversial gas deal with Russia in 2009.

"The judicial panel found no grounds for the appeal," judge Olexander Elfimov said to cries of "Shame!" from Tymoshenko's supporters.

The same panel also left in place Tymoshenko's seven-year jail sentence and $190 million fine while finding no grounds to her claim that she had been made the victim of political persecution.

"This shameful decision once again proves that a dictatorship has settled over Ukraine," Tymoshenko's daughter and defence campaign leader Yevgenia said after hearings attended by former Polish president Aleksander Kwasniewski.

"No one will be able to get a fair hearing in Ukraine now. That dictator (President Viktor Yanukovych) will control everything," she warned.

European Union for its part voiced "deep disappointment" while noting that the ruling upheld the results of a trial that "did not respect international standards."

The Council of Europe also said it was deeply disappointed, saying that "her conviction in the gas case amounts to the criminalisation of normal political decision-making."

The rejection marks the end of Tymoshenko's domestic legal recourse and clears the way for her to take her full case to the European Court of Human Rights -- a move the defence had been kept from making by months of judicial delays.

"We will complete our additional appeal and file it (with the Strasbourg court) by the end of the week," Tymoshenko's lawyer Sergiy Vlasenko told reporters outside the courtroom.

The Strasbourg court opened hearings on Tuesday into whether Tymoshenko's pre-trial detention was politically motivated and whether her prison conditions had violated her basic rights.

The case against her was launched shortly after Yanukovych narrowly beat her in a bitter 2010 ballot whose outcome Tymoshenko -- backed by Ukrainian nationalists who seek closer EU ties -- initially refused to accept.

But the European court had no legal authority to rule on the merits of the conviction and the seven-year jail sentence until all avenues had been exhausted in Ukraine.

Even a positive European verdict however may still not see Tymoshenko's release because she faces a brand new set of tax evasion and embezzlement charges that may keep her in jail for years to come.

The fiery and divisive figure's case -- viewed with increasing dispassion by Ukrainians who have grown tired of their leaders' incessant internal squabbles -- has been watched closely by both the European Union and Washington.

EU negotiators have made the release of Tymoshenko and her other jailed allies a condition for Ukraine being given preliminary backing to eventual membership in the 27-nation bloc.

Yanukovych rejects his Western critics as biased and defends the case as part of a legitimate campaign against the type of corruption that has embroiled governments for most of Ukraine's recent past.

He has also spent recent months cautiously courting Russia -- a worrying shift for EU officials who are hoping to dislodge Kiev from Moscow's embrace.

The overtures come as his government and its base of Russian-speaking Ukrainians face monumental hurdles in October 28 parliamentary elections that the ruling Regions Party enters with its approval rating near all-time lows.

Ukraine is dependent on Russian gas for its energy and has seen its past Orange government's overtures with the West interrupted by the types of delivery crises that Tymoshenko was trying to solve in 2009.

Oil spill fouls Curacao shore, threatens flamingos

(AP) ? An extensive fuel spill has fouled a stretch of shoreline and oiled pink flamingos and other wildlife in a nature preserve in Curacao, conservationists and residents of the tiny Dutch Caribbean island said Monday.

The leader of a local environmental group asserted Monday that the spill of crude oil at Curacao's Jan Kok preserve was from at least one storage tank owned by the Isla oil refinery, the largest business and employer on the southern Caribbean island best known for its diving opportunities and colorful capital of Willemstad. The island's refinery is run by the state-owned oil company of Venezuela, only about 40 miles away.

"This is probably the biggest (environmental) disaster in Curacao," said Peter van Leeuwen of the Stichting SMOC group. "The whole area of Jan Kok is black. The birds are black. The crabs are black. The plants are black. Everything is draped in oil."

Curacao-based journalist Dick Drayer, who covers the Netherlands Antilles for Dutch television, estimated that the spill covers an area "of around 30 soccer fields." He added that three distinct oil slicks are floating offshore and are "threatening the southern coast of Curacao."

Photographs of Curacao's southern Jan Kok area show a darkened coast and gobs of oil dripping off of coastline rocks and mixing in the surf. Oil-smudged flamingos, crustaceans, and lizards can be seen struggling on the wind-swept reserve of salt flats.

Van Leeuwen said the spill started threatening wildlife sometime last week but cleanup efforts by the company only recently got under way at the nature reserve, no more than 1,000 meters away from big tanks where Petroleos de Venezuela SA stores thousands of gallons of crude oil.

"A lot of time has gone by without any action. It's been about one week before somebody at the company has done anything at all," he said, adding that workmen are now excavating holes on Jan Kok's beach to capture the spilled oil and mix it with sand and soil in order to cart it away.

Numerous calls to Kenneth Gijsbertha, the Curacao spokesman for the Isla oil refinery, went unanswered Monday.

The Isla refinery is a sprawling expanse of metal pipes, chemical converters and concrete by Willemstad's bay. For years, activists have complained about the thick haze of smoke that sometimes blankets the area around the refinery, which can produce roughly 220,000 barrels a day.

Venezuela's state-owned oil company is grappling with arguably more pressing problems. On Saturday, a huge explosion rocked the energy-rich country's biggest oil refinery, unleashing a ferocious fire that killed at least 41 people and injured more than 150 others.

Jacintha Constancia, Curacao's minister of public health, environment and nature, also did not answer calls on Monday to explain what the government was doing about the spill or to prevent future accidents.

Nena Sanchez, a painter and former "Miss Curacao" who runs a plantation house and art studio on a hillside just above the Jan Kok salt flats, described the oil spill as "definitely extensive."

"We're very, very upset about the whole deal. We don't know if the damage is so bad that the flamingos will go somewhere else because there is nothing left to eat here," Sanchez said from her cactus-studded retreat above Jan Kok.

Curacao dive shop operator Ingrid Van Den Bosch said she has seen no evidence that the island's world-class diving sites have been impacted by the spill. ___

Leaked training manual shows the do's and don'ts of being an Apple Genius

Leaked Apple training manual shows the do's and don'ts of a Genius

If you've ever been curious about what it takes to be an Apple Store Genius, a leaked internal training manual may provide those answers for you. Besides loving Apple products you must also remember things like "Apple products never get hot, only warm" or that "A Mac doesn't crash, it stops responding", among many other interesting tidbits.

Gizmodo has gotten ahold of one of Apple's more recent training manuals that explains what Geniuses are taught during their training. It includes everything from how to be empathetic to words you should never say to customers.

Did your computer crash? No, it "stops responding." Never say crash.

What if some Apple software has a bug? Wrong: there's an "issue," "condition," or simply "situation."

You don't "eliminate" a problem?you "reduce" it.

No Apple products are hot?at most they're "warm."

If anything it does provide some interesting insight into how Geniuses are trained to interact with the general public. Some of the word trickery is no doubt useful in calming panicked customers considering it's not very often that you see someone freaking out and sobbing hysterically in front of the Genius Bar. Then again, Apple prides themselves on providing over the top customer service and perhaps using toned down and understandable terminology creates a better experience.

Hit the link below to check out even more pages and context on what it takes to be an Apple Genius. And remember, next time your MacBook Pro gets so hot, err warm, that it could reheat your morning coffee on its own, any Genius can tell you that Apple products never actually get hot, therefore, you have nothing to worry about. Phew, I feel better now.

To cap or not to cap: Scientists find new RNA phenomenon that challenges dogma

ScienceDaily (Aug. 27, 2012) ? Some RNA molecules spend time in a restful state akin to hibernation rather than automatically carrying out their established job of delivering protein-building instructions in cells, new research suggests.

And instead of being a fluke or a mistake, the research suggests that this restful period appears to be a programmed step for RNA produced by certain types of genes, including some that control cell division and decide where proteins will work in a cell to sustain the cell's life.

This could mean that protein production in cells is not as clear-cut as biology textbooks suggest, scientists say.

"This could mean there are more variations to the proteins in our bodies than we realize; it means that RNAs can be stored and reactivated and we don't know what biological process that affects -- it could influence embryonic development, or neurological activity, or even cancer," said Daniel Schoenberg, professor of molecular and cellular biochemistry at Ohio State University and lead author of the study.

Schoenberg and colleagues discovered this phenomenon by tracing the origins of a cap-like structure on messenger RNA (mRNA) that is known to coordinate most of this RNA molecule's short life. Messenger RNA is manufactured in a cell's nucleus and each mRNA contains the instructions needed to produce a specific protein that a cell needs to live.

Until now, scientists have believed that once an mRNA is no longer needed to make protein, the cap comes off and the molecule is degraded, its job complete. But Schoenberg's lab discovered in 2009 that some mRNAs that were thought to be degraded were instead still present in the cell, but they were missing part of their sequence and had caps placed back on the newly formed ends. Because these mRNAs were in the cytoplasm, the changes had to happen there rather than inside the nucleus.

In this new study, the researchers were looking for further evidence of these apparent rogue mRNAs, but instead they found that a completely unexpected biological process occurs before some proteins are even a glimmer in a gene's eye: The uncapping and recapping of mRNAs outside the nucleus results from a cap recycling operation in the cell cytoplasm. This process appeared to enable certain RNAs to pause, without being degraded, before launching protein production.

"What this discovery tells us is a complete fundamental reworking of the relationship between a gene, messenger RNA and a protein. It's more complicated than we realize," Schoenberg said.

The research is published online in the open-access journal Cell Reports.

That fragments of mRNA could exist at all in the cell's main body was first reported by other scientists in 1992. Years later, Schoenberg asked a postdoctoral researcher in his lab to revisit these unexpected RNA fragments and confirm they exist. The postdoc's experiments showed that these mRNA, thought to be the dregs left over from their degradation, had caps on them -- suggesting they still had the potential to function in protein production. Schoenberg, also director of Ohio State's Center for RNA Biology, has been investigating this cytoplasmic capping operation ever since.

In 2009, he and colleagues reported the discovery of two enzymes in the cell's main body that would enable mRNA capping to occur completely outside the nucleus and in the cytoplasm instead.

In the current studies, Schoenberg sought to determine the physiological significance of this capping operation. The researchers engineered a way to block cytoplasmic capping in cells in the lab and then looked at changes in more than 55,000 RNAs.

This interference with cytoplasmic capping revealed that two different types of pathways could exist in the cells -- some mRNAs remained stable without their caps, while others without caps were rapidly destroyed. This finding indicated that mRNAs can lose their caps in the cytoplasm and at some point get recapped. With further experimentation, the researchers determined that only some mRNAs lost their caps in the cell body.

"It's not all of any particular message that's uncapped, just a portion of a message," Schoenberg said. "We wanted to show that we have uncapped RNAs in the cell and they are not degraded. It means they're stored that way."

This finding offered hints that there is a higher order to this phenomenon, and that some mRNAs purposefully rest in an uncapped state without being degraded by enzymes within the cell whose job is to remove them. It also suggested that as the capping circumstances change inside the cell body, signals from genes might undergo change that allows for two or more proteins, one being shorter than the other, to be made from the same mRNA.

"We have always thought that one gene would give an mRNA for one kind of protein. But what we have found makes us wonder if multiple proteins could be made from each of the messenger RNAs that undergo decapping and recapping in the cytoplasm," Schoenberg said.

The researchers used bioinformatics technology to determine which genes were manufacturing mRNAs that could exist in this uncapped and recapped state in the cytoplasm. These genes included those that control some of the most basic elements of cell survival: They determine the location of proteins and RNAs within the cell and, perhaps most significantly, the mitotic cell cycle -- part of the process of cell division.

"It wasn't random. It was very specific," Schoenberg said. "There are specific families of mRNAs that are regulated in this way, and that has ramifications for how proteins are expressed and regulated."

As an example, he cited how neurons communicate messages across vast distances to other nerve cells. It is known that mRNAs are deliberately kept in a silent state while they travel from, for example, the spinal cord to the fingertip, where they are then activated to make new proteins.

"What would the condition be of the mRNA to keep it silent? The possibility is it doesn't have a cap on it, and if it doesn't, it can't be translated. Maybe cytoplasmic capping in neurons is a function that allows that message to be translated at just the right time," Schoenberg said.

Or, in the case of cancer: "What if one of the things that happens is you are making shortened proteins instead of full-length proteins and the regulatory part of the protein is missing in the shortened protein? If that's true, can you interfere with this process and interfere with malignancy as a result?"

For now, these scientists can only speculate about what this unexpected biological process really means. Schoenberg's lab plans to investigate the phenomenon more thoroughly in a line of breast cancer cells.

Healthy lifestyle reduces the risk of hypertension by two thirds

Healthy behaviours regarding alcohol, physical activity, vegetable intake and body weight reduce the risk of hypertension by two thirds, according to research presented at the ESC Congress today. The findings were presented by Professor Pekka Jousilahti from National Institute for Health and Welfare.

According to the World Health Organization, hypertension is the leading cause of mortality in the world, contributing annually to over 7 million deaths (about 15% of all deaths). Therefore, prevention of hypertension is essential to improving health and preventing morbidity and mortality, both in developing and developed countries.

The purpose of this study was to examine whether five major cardiovascular disease related lifestyle factors ? smoking, alcohol consumption, physical activity, obesity and consumption of vegetables ? predict the future increase of blood pressure and development of clinical hypertension, and need for antihypertensive drug treatment.

This large prospective population-based cohort study included 9,637 Finnish men and 11,430 women who were 25 to 74 years of age and free of hypertension during the baseline measurements (1982-2002). Healthy lifestyle factors were defined as: (1) not smoking, (2) alcohol consumption less than 50g per week, (3) leisure time physical activity at least 3 times per week, (4) daily consumption of vegetables, and (5) normal weight (BMI

Data on the development of hypertension during the follow-up period were obtained from the Social Insurance Institution of Finland register of people entitled to special reimbursement for antihypertensive drugs. During a mean follow-up of 16 years, 709 men and 890 women developed hypertension.

Smoking was omitted from the final analysis. Professor Jousilahti said: "Even though smoking is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease, it was not associated with the development of hypertension in our analyses, which is in accordance with previous studies."

The four remaining healthy lifestyle factors were included in the analysis. Hazard ratios for hypertension associated with adherence to 0 (the reference group), 1, 2, 3, and 4 healthy lifestyle factors were calculated after adjusting for age, year of entering the study, education, and smoking.

The hazard ratios for hypertension associated with adherence to 0, 1, 2, 3, and 4 healthy lifestyle factors were 1.00, 0.74, 0.51, 0.34, and 0.33 for men, and 1.00, 0.89, 0.68, 0.41, and 0.37 for women. "The risk of hypertension was only one third among those having all four healthy lifestyle factors compared to those having none," said Professor Jousilahti. "Even having one to three healthy lifestyle factors reduced the risk of hypertension remarkably. For example having two healthy lifestyle factors reduced the risk of hypertension by nearly 50% in men and by more than 30% in women."

"Our analysis suggests that adherence to healthy lifestyle factors may have more of an impact on risk of hypertension in men than women," he added. "This could be because of the stronger association of obesity and alcohol consumption with the risk of hypertension in men than in women."

"Four modifiable lifestyle factors: alcohol consumption, physical activity, consumption of vegetables and keeping normal weight have a remarkable effect on the development of hypertension," said Professor Jousilahti. "Lifestyle modification has a huge public health potential to prevent hypertension. While our research suggests that lifestyle modification may produce greater reductions in hypertension in men than women, it also shows large benefits in women, and adherence to all four healthy lifestyle factors had a nearly similar effect in both sexes. Both men and women should take steps towards a healthier lifestyle to decrease their risk of hypertension."

He concluded: "Our study was focused on prevention of hypertension and therefore included subjects who did not have hypertension at baseline. But the results should apply to the treatment of patients with hypertension, who can reduce their blood pressure by modifying the four lifestyle factors alone, or by making these modifications while taking blood pressure lowering medication.

Save Invest Give: Why Buy Individual Stocks?

I'm often asked why I buy individual stocks.? The tone of the question is usually that someone like me really ought to know better than to do a foolish thing like that.? Why not just buy mutual funds or exchange traded funds?

The arguments for funds are very strong and I understand that.? Most of the arguments are variations of two key points: (1) Most investors aren't likely to beat the indexes, and (2) the commissions and other fees are much less for?funds.

I'm not going to debate the first point in this article.? The second point, however, involves fairly straightforward mathematics.? The commission expenses of your portfolio are mainly a function of how often you trade, how diversified you want to be, and the size of your portfolio.

If you only have $1,000 to invest in equities, buying individual stocks does not make a lot of sense.? If you want to buy 10 different stocks so that you have at least some level of diversification, then you are going to buy a paltry $100 of each stock.? At $10 commission per trade, your entry commissions would eat?up 10% of your money.? Buying $1,000 of an index fund is clearly more appropriate in this case.

Similarly, if you want to own hundreds and hundreds of stocks, it's unlikely the size of your portfolio will be large enough to support the commissions for all those stocks at a reasonable cost.? Also, if you like to market time most or all of your portfolio, you will not want to to have to place dozens of buy or sell orders and incur dozens of transaction commissions when you want to "get in" or "get out".? This is why short term traders love exchange traded funds and index futures.

However, there is a particular type of portfolio that is the sweet spot for individual stocks.? They can be very cost effective when you have a reasonably?large portfolio in dollar terms, you only want to buy 20 or 40 stocks, and you don't trade often.? For example, the value of my dividend portfolio is getting close to $700K.? I hold about 25 to 30 different stocks, and only make about a half dozen trades per year.? The commission costs on such a portfolio is about 0.01%.? This is actually cheaper than index funds, and much, much cheaper than actively managed funds.?

Pets and More Pets ? The Noble And Elegant Thoroughbred Is Not ...

A purebred horse of any breed might be referred to as a thoroughbred of its type. Technically however it is a distinct breed. It is found performing in most disciplines but is the only breed seen in horse-racing in its purest form. They are referred to as ?hot-blooded? meaning they are fast, high-spirited and full of fire. Horses used for draft work such as the Shire and Clydesdale are referred to cold-blooded. The Thoroughbred is the fastest of all horse breeds.

The thoroughbred is the epitome of elegance and beauty. It is usually quite tall standing over 15.2 hands high. Horses are measured in increments of four inches called ?hands?. Although it should be robust, it is not heavily built. It has a finely chiseled head with a straight or dished profile. The legs are straight and clean.

If a horse is to be fast he needs sloping shoulders and powerful quarters. For racing, horses also need good hearts and lungs. A deep chest allows for this. The coat is fine and never becomes very thick even in the middle of winter. Most need extra rugged in winter.

While a broken-color Thoroughbred is rarely seen, some breeders are specializing in their production. However, at the moment they are not seen on the racetrack. The most unusual coloring seen in the breed was The Tetrarch, an undefeated Irish horse which was born in 1911. The Tetrarch was grey with white splotches. All solid colors are commonly seen as are white markings on the face and legs.

Steeple-chasing and racing are the main pursuits of the thoroughbred. It is also found in dressage, show-jumping, eventing and other horse sports. It is not as strong and solid as some of the other breeds which are sometimes preferred for these pursuits. Its excitable nature sometimes goes against it too. Smaller specimens may be used for polo and polocrosse as it is fast and maneuverable.

The Thoroughbred had its beginnings in England and is now found throughout the world. It is a great ?improver? of other breeds and the blood-lines can be found in the backgrounds of many breeds. When crossed with heavier horses, it adds elegance and speed. Such crossbred horses are in high demand for eventing and hunting.

NFL preseason: Jake Locker, Joe Flacco shine; Kevin Kolb rises?

What we learned from watching Thursday night's Week 3 NFL preseason action, leading off with passers under the spotlight in Nashville:

Jake looks comfortable; Cardinals still unsettled

The Tennessee Titans felt good about their starting quarterback decision, but the Arizona Cardinals continue to have an uneasy feeling about the choice they have yet to make.

Jake Locker, the Titans' first-round draft pick last year, didn't disappoint in his first game since getting the nod as the No. 1 QB. He displayed the arm and athleticism the team loves. Locker (11-for-20, 134 yards passing, two touchdowns) could have been more accurate?some of his throws sailed high?but otherwise he starred in front of the home crowd.

Locker was locked into his best receivers even without Kenny Britt, throwing short TD passes to wideouts Nate Washington and Kendall Wright. It's clear Locker has developed good chemistry with Wright, the Titans' 2012 first-round pick. It helps that he's also supported by Chris Johnson's running and a strong offensive line.

On the other hand, the Cardinals' competing quarterbacks, John Skelton and Kevin Kolb, continue to get little help up front. Left tackle D.J. Young, thrust into the lineup to replace injured Levi Brown (torn triceps), struggled mightily, and the interior line also consistently succumbed to the Titans' pressure.

Skelton didn't do much with his short first-half stint (4-for-10, 41 yards, interception), opening the door for the resilient Kolb. The good news for the Cards is that Kolb looked comfortable and had his healthiest, most efficient game (17-for-22, 156 yards, TD) of the preseason. On the downside, he also threw a pair of bad interceptions.

Kolb had nowhere to go but up and probably did enough to move into a dead heat with Skelton. The hard truth, however, is the Cardinals aren't a playoff team with either quarterback starting in 2012.

Packers run with Benson

Although quarterback Aaron Rodgers was the most productive Green Bay rusher (six carries, 52 yards, two TDs) in a 27-13 win over the Cincinnati Bengals, the team had to be pleased by the debut of former Bengal Cedric Benson.

The recent free-agent addition (6 carries, 38 yards) looks well-equipped to handle being a complementary power runner to Rodgers and the Pack's high-flying passing attack. That may signal the end in Green Bay for banged-up former starter James Starks.

Another Packer offensive player in trouble is Rodgers' backup, Graham Harrell. After having a dismal game against Cleveland, Harrell completed only five of 12 attempts for 26 yards against Cincinnati and also lost a fumble. It will be interesting to see if team officials start looking for outside help at No. 2.

Raves for Ravens' Flacco

Joe Flacco is out to prove he belongs among the NFL's select quarterbacks this season and earn a lucrative long-term extension in the process. He was razor- sharp in Baltimore's dress rehearsal, cutting through the Jacksonville Jaguars' defense (27-for-36, 266 yards, two TDs, INT) while spreading the ball around in an up-tempo passing game.

Flacco and emerging second-year speed receiver Torrey Smith (8 catches, 103 yards) are picking up where they left off in the AFC Championship game in putting more pop in the Ravens' offense. The result Thursday was a 48-17 romp.

HOBBS, N.M. (AP) ? Republican presidential contender Mitt Romney promised on Thursday to aggressively expand off-shore oil drilling along Virginia, North Carolina and the Gulf of Mexico, changing the subject from social issues like abortion and Medicare that have dominated the debate in the days before the critical Republican National Convention.

Speaking to voters in the heart of New Mexico's oil and gas industry, Romney declared that his energy plans ? which include drilling for oil in a federal Alaskan wildlife reserve ? would create 3 million jobs and more than $1 trillion in new revenue. And he predicted complete "North American energy independence by 2020, a never-realized goal claimed by presidential candidates for decades."

"That means we produce all the energy we use in North America," Romney said, emphasizing an expansion of oil and gas over wind and solar production. "This is not some pie-in-the-sky kind of thing. This is a real achievable objective."

President Barack Obama did not face voters on Thursday. Instead, he deployed a popular former president, Bill Clinton, to help convince a divided electorate that he simply needs more time to fix the nation's struggling economy. Clinton is expected to speak at the Democratic National Convention next month and play a prominent role in the final months before Election Day.

"We need to keep going with his plan," Clinton says of Obama in a new television ad set to run in eight battleground states.

The push to re-frame the debate comes at a delicate time, sandwiched between the sudden resurgence of abortion in the race and Monday's opening of the Republican National Convention. The event in Tampa is supposed to be all about nominating Romney, emphasizing his plans for the economy and projecting unity. But those plans were disrupted this week by Republican Senate candidate Todd Akin of Missouri, who said in an interview that victims of "legitimate rape" can biologically avoid pregnancy. Romney, who has relentlessly tried to avoid a fight over social issues, led a chorus of Republican officials who demanded Akin abandon his Senate bid. The congressman has so far refused.

The uproar raises broader concerns for Romney's effort to win over female voters. At the same time, a strengthening tropical storm is forcing Republicans to prepare for big schedule changes or even the possibility of mandatory evacuations. GOP convention planners on Thursday said they are working closely with local officials and are moving forward with the convention as scheduled.

The stakes are high, the outcome uncertain 75 days before voters choose their next president and the majorities of Congress.

Polling suggests that the presidential contest is essentially a tossup, although Obama maintains a slight lead among women. Research also suggests that more voters trust Obama's plans for Medicare than Romney's. It's an advantage that could prove significant given Romney's selection of running mate Paul Ryan, the House budget architect who crafted a controversial plan to transform Medicare into a voucher-like system for future retirees.

But Romney did not mention Medicare or abortion in Hobbs. And he agreed to an interview with CBS' Denver affiliate, KCNC, only under the stipulation that he would not be asked about abortion or Akin's comments.

Instead, the former Massachusetts governor accused Obama of crafting an energy policy designed to benefit campaign contributors.

"He's taken federal dollars, your money, to advance these companies ? solar companies, wind companies ? $90 billion in so-called green jobs," Romney said of the president, seizing on the administration's investment in the failed solar company Solyndra. "I don't want the government investing in companies, particularly companies of his campaign contributors."

That's much the same argument Democrats levy against Romney, whose energy policy favors the oil and gas industry. The former businessman has deep ties to big oil and raised more than $7 million from industry executives during a campaign fundraiser in Texas earlier this week.

Obama campaign spokeswoman Lis Smith called Romney's energy plan "backward."

"This isn't a recipe for energy independence," Smith said. "It's just another irresponsible scheme to help line the pockets of big oil while allowing the U.S to fall behind and cede the clean energy sector to China."

The cornerstone of Romney's plan is opening up more areas for offshore oil drilling, including mid-Atlantic swing states like North Carolina and Virginia, where it is currently banned. He also wants to give states the power to establish all forms of energy production on federal lands, a significant shift in current policy that could face strong opposition in Congress.

Romney specifically cited drilling in Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge as part of a broad plan to generate millions of additional barrels of oil each day.

A Romney campaign official later downplayed the comment. The plan would revive a longtime Republican goal to allow drilling for oil in the wildlife refuge. Congress has blocked drilling there for more than a quarter-century.

Romney also plans to approve the Keystone XL pipeline that has worried environmentalists and would run from Canada to U.S. refineries in Texas. And he is calling for the end of a production tax credit for wind power that is set to expire at the end of the year.

Many Republicans in battleground states such as Iowa support the credit, which the American Wind Energy Association says sustains 37,000 jobs.

"I think all energy sources need to stand on their own two feet," Romney said in an interview with a Colorado TV station Thursday, arguing that wind and solar power are subsidized at a higher rate than oil. "I would level the playing field."

Romney's campaign says he does not support ending oil subsidies.

The Obama administration has proposed a plan that would allow energy companies to begin seismic testing to find oil and natural reserves in the Atlantic Ocean. Companies would use the information to determine where to apply for energy leases, although no leases would be available until at least 2017.

The president told donors in New York this week that under his administration, dependence on foreign oil has gone below 50 percent for the first time in 13 years.

While the energy debate dominated the discussion on Thursday, Democrats will continue to pursue the abortion debate to help drive a wedge between Republicans and women.

Obama advisers consider Akin's comments a significant development and plan to continue linking Akin to Romney's running mate, Ryan, who cosponsored a bill with Akin to permanently ban federal funding for abortion except in cases of incest and forcible rape.

That language, which was eventually changed, would have narrowed the exception for rape victims.

Romney does not oppose abortion in cases of rape and incest or if it will save the mother's life, while Ryan does oppose abortion in cases of rape and incest.
