Iranian game gives new life to Salman Rushdie death threat

21 hrs.

Back in?1989, Iran's Ayatollah Khomeini issued a fatwa against author Salman Rushdie after he penned "The Satanic Verses" ? a book the Ayatollah declared blasphemous against Islam.

Despite the call for Rushdie's assassination, all these years later the writer?is still alive ...?and tweeting to his heart's content.

Now, a group of students from the?government-sponsored?Islamic Association of Students are giving new life to?the?Rushdie death threat ? albeit?through?a computer?game.

The group?is in the midst of working on a game with?the catchy title of "The Stressful Life of Salman Rushdie and Implementation of His Verdict," reports? The Guardian.?The game was revealed at the International Computer Games Expo taking place in Tehran this week.?

Mohammad-Taqi Fakhrian of the student association told Iran's Mehr news agency that, "We felt we should find a way to introduce our third and fourth generation to the fatwa against Salman Rushdie and its importance," reports?Guardian writer?Saeed Kamali Dehghan.?

Details about the game are few,?and no one has said exactly how it will teach players about the fatwa, but?the student association reported that "initial phases of production" have been completed, according to The Guardian.

"The Stressful Life of Salman Rushdie" is certainly part of a growing number of games being made in the Middle East and from a Middle-Eastern perspective.

As Reuters recently reported, the Arab world has one of the fastest growing communities of online gamers. And developers from the region are increasingly producing games that tell their stories.

Iran's Army recently released its first video game?called "Battle in the Gulf of Aden."?And?Saudi developers?are in the midst of working on "Unearthed:?The Trail of Ibn Battuta" (which game site Kotaku?calls an "Uncharted" knockoff). Check out the trailer here:

First private space telescope may hunt asteroids

Citizens, defend thyselves. A private, non-profit organisation plans to launch a space telescope dedicated to finding deadly asteroids before they find us - a project that governments have been slow to take up.

The B612 Foundation - named for the asteroid that was home to The Little Prince - today announced their plan to build, fly and operate the first private space telescope: an asteroid hunter called Sentinel. The telescope will cost several hundred million dollars, which the foundation hopes to raise through philanthropic donations in the next six years.

"We think this is eminently doable," says Ed Lu, a former NASA astronaut and chief executive officer of B612, who compared the project to funding museums or concert halls. "Their donor base is local. Ours is global. This telescope will be owned by the people of the world."

A little nudge

The inner solar system is teeming with asteroids, millions of which cross Earth's path and are large enough to do serious damage on impact. Astronomers estimate that we have seen just 1 per cent of the asteroids larger than the one that leveled the forests of Tunguska, Siberia in 1908 - half a million are still out there, unseen.

The good news is, there are ways to nudge them out of our path - if we have enough warning. In 2005, Congress directed NASA to find 90 per cent of near-Earth asteroids 140 metres across and larger by 2020 - but a 2010 panel found that existing surveys weren't up to the job.

"Asteroids were being found, but no one was doing anything about what happens if we find one with our address on it," says Rusty Schweickart, emeritus chair of B612 and an Apollo 9 astronaut. "NASA is sort of falling off the edge of a fiscal cliff. We've got 99 per cent of the objects left to go, and unfortunately NASA is not going to be able to do it."

With the success of the SpaceX Dragon capsule, which recently became the first private spacecraft to dock with the International Space Station, and suggestions to mine near-Earth asteroids for minerals, privately funded space missions are becoming more realistic.

Looking out for us

Sentinel will conduct its mission to protect humans from meeting the same fate as the dinosaurs from a solar orbit about the same distance from the Sun as Venus. The 50 centimetre wide telescope will look outward towards the Earth and beyond, so that dangerous asteroids will always be fully lit. It will look in infrared wavelengths, where small asteroids that don't reflect much light can be detected by their heat.

The team hopes to launch Sentinel on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket in 2017 or 2018, and keep the telescope in operation for 5.5 years, taking four images of the night sky every 26 days. Lu predicts that it will find more asteroids in its first month than all previous telescopes combined.

"I think that's important, and it's something that we need," says Jose Luis Galache of the Minor Planet Center in Cambridge, Massachusetts. "Any telescope that's looking for asteroids is a good telescope."

Why supermarket tomatoes taste lousy

Most supermarket tomatoes are flavorless at best, and a single gene mutation goes a long way toward explaining why.

The mutation arose as breeders cultivated tomatoes to ripen evenly, a trait that makes harvesting cheaper and more efficient. As pretty as they look, though, mutated tomato fruits are less efficient at photosynthesizing, found a new study. As a result, they make less sugar and other compounds, which means they often taste far worse than tomatoes that may look blotchy but are full of explode-in-your-mouth sweetness.

For consumers who like their Caprese salads rich and complex, the results suggest that, for now, heirloom varieties at co-ops and farmer's markets may be your best bet. Eventually, the findings could help breeders put more satisfying flavor profiles back into everyday grocery store tomatoes.

NEWS: Grocery Cart Suggests Better Food Choices

"When you have fruit or berries and you sprinkle sugar on top to accentuate the flavors, you can see how every little bit helps," said Ann Powell, a biochemist at the University of California, Davis. Our sensitivity to sweetness makes a gene for sugar production extra-important. "By knowing which gene it is, breeders can now select for varieties when plants are young."

For some 70 years, tomato breeders have worked to create fruits that are uniformly light green before they ripen. The advantage of this even coloring is that fruits become ripe all at once, instead of at the top end first. That makes it much easier for farmers to tell when it's time to harvest.

Motivated more by the question of why tomatoes bother being green in the first place than by the question of why tomatoes so often taste terrible, Powell went on a hunt for proteins inside the fruit called transcription factors, which direct the genes that code for various traits.

VIDEO: Why does fruit turn brown?

That search led her to a type of protein in tomatoes called GLK. When intact, she and colleagues reported Thursday in the journal Science, the protein makes pre-ripened fruits appear dark green at the shoulder, where flesh meets stem. With the mutation, on the other hand, fruits are light green all over before they turn red.

Scientists have known for a long time that two GLK proteins in the leaves of tomato and other plants direct the production of chloroplasts, which are responsible for photosynthesis, turning sunlight into sugars, and some of those sugars travel into the fruit to add sweetness.

Now it appears that the fruits of tomato plants also contain a GLK protein, which boosts sugar production just enough to make a real flavor difference. The dark green shoulder is a sign that extra photosynthesis is happening. Chemical analyses showed that tomatoes with normal GLK proteins also contained more lycopene, an antioxidant that gives tomatoes their red color.

HOWSTUFFWORKS: How to Pick Ripe Fruit

Once tomatoes turn red, though, it becomes impossible to tell which fruits have the mutation, making it highly unlikely that a supermarket shopper would be able to pick out tomatoes with naturally higher levels of sugar.

In fact, the chances of unmutated tomatoes showing up in any major grocery store are extremely slim. When Powell and colleagues looked at 25 commercial varieties of tomatoes from all over the world, they found the exact same mutation in all of them.

"The mutation they describe in their paper is in literally 100 percent of modern breeds sold in grocery stores today," said Harry Klee, a molecular geneticist at the University of Florida, Gainesville, who studies the chemistry and genetics of flavor in fruits and vegetables. "It's a really good illustration of some of the problems with modern breeding of tomatoes."

The GLK mutation isn't the only reason why supermarket tomatoes are so often tasteless, Klee added. But it's an important reason, and it demonstrates how focusing on aesthetics can end up sacrificing other important qualities in an entire generation of produce.

"When you focus on one thing and neglect the other ? the other being flavor ? you can have some really bad unintended consequences," Klee said. "The consumer is going to have to realize that their tomatoes may not look perfect. There may be a patch of green around the top of the fruit. But to me, I would say, if I see that a fruit is not perfectly red and perfectly uniformly ripened, maybe it's going to taste better."

FDA approves lorcaserin, first weight-loss drug since 1999

The Food and Drug Administration has approved marketing of the weight-loss drug lorcaserin, the first prescription anti-obesity medication to win the FDA's blessing since the agency approved orlistat in 1999.

Once it is cleared by the Drug Enforcement Administration, the drug will be marketed in the United States under the commercial name Belviq.

The medication won marketing approval as a drug for "chronic weight management in adult patients" with a body mass index greater than 30, or for those with a BMI of 27 or above with a weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol or Type 2 diabetes.

The FDA's approval came with a significant warning to consumers likely to flock to a medication that could help boost their weight loss: The safety and effectiveness of Belviq when used alongside other diet medications has not been established.

Nor, the FDA said, has the effect of Belviq on the long-term risk of having, or dying from, a heart attack or stroke.

The approval comes after a lengthy review by an agency under pressure to help Americans lose weight but also to screen out drugs that could prove dangerous once embraced by a large number of patients.

Just over 1 in 3 adult Americans is considered obese, and an additional 36% are overweight, prompting widespread concern that Type 2 diabetes, heart disease and certain cancers linked to obesity will overwhelm the U.S. healthcare system. Already, obesity-related disease is estimated to account for $147 billion in annual healthcare costs.

Belviq, made by San Diego-based Arena Pharmaceuticals, is one of four weight-loss drugs the FDA has anguished over in recent years. Safety concerns have prompted the agency to order the makers of two other candidate drugs to conduct and comb through additional research. A third drug was withdrawn after it was linked to an elevated suicide risk.

In the 28 months since the makers of Belviq submitted the drug for FDA consideration, the agency also demanded the withdrawal of Meridia after studies showed it increased the risk of heart attack and stroke. That left only two FDA-approved weight-loss drugs on the market: orlistat and phentermine.

The result has been ? to the growing frustration of many obesity experts ? almost no pharmaceutical aid for a steadily growing population of Americans desperate for help in shedding pounds.

Belviq offers would-be dieters modest benefits. One clinical trial found that two-thirds of patients on the drug lost 5% of their body weight, while one-third lost at least 10%, after one year of taking the drug as a supplement to diet and exercise. Subjects' average weight loss was 17 to 18 pounds.

Still, even this kind of modest weight loss can help lower a patient's blood pressure, improve blood cholesterol measures and hold off or delay the onset of Type 2 diabetes, experts said.

As a means of boosting weight loss results without surgery, lorcaserin "addresses one of the greatest therapeutic gaps we have in medicine," said Dr. Arya M. Sharma, an obesity expert and professor of medicine at the University of Alberta in Canada.

The FDA's decision came after the makers of lorcaserin allayed fears, raised in clinical trials, that the drug might damage heart valves. Experts were also worried that animals given a higher dose than the amount intended for patients had an increased incidence of brain and breast tumors.

By last May, Arena and its partner, Tokyo-based Eisai Pharmaceuticals, brought the FDA data showing that such worrisome side effects were highly unlikely to emerge at the doses it expected patients would be prescribed.

On Wednesday, Arena said it would conduct further studies to assess the safety and effectiveness of Belviq's long-term use and its safety for weight management in children. The drug is not FDA-approved for children, but doctors may legally prescribe it to them off-label.

Still to come are FDA decisions on two other weight-loss drug candidates. Qnexa, a combination of the diet drug phentermine and the anticonvulsant topiramate, sponsored byVivus Inc. of Mountain View, is now under review by the FDA.

Another medication ? Contrave, a combination of the anti-alcoholism drug naltrexone and the antidepressant bupropion ? also awaits an FDA decision.

Dr. Lee Kaplan, head of Massachusetts General Hospital's weight management program, said that while lorcaserin's effects appeared modest, there were some patients who could be expected to respond to the drug with major weight loss.

Lorcaserin "is not going to be the magic bullet. But it offers a very important tool.... It's a tool I know I'll use," he said.

Kaiser Permanente weight management specialist Dr. Jack Der-Sarkissian said the new pill "has a lot of promise" but expressed concerns about the effect it would have upon patients' expectations.

"I anticipate a lot of patients will want to try these," he said. "My worry is that patients would jump on a pill more readily than the other means of weight loss ? behavioral modification ? that have a long history of safety."

Mets blow out Cubs 17-1

Associated Press Sports

updated 4:36 p.m. ET June 27, 2012

CHICAGO (AP) - Daniel Murphy homered twice, Scott Hairston hit a grand slam and David Wright drove in five runs to lead the New York Mets to a 17-1 rout of the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday.

Ike Davis had a three-run homer and an RBI double as he combined with Murphy, Hairston and Wright to drive in all 17 runs - with each having at least four RBIs - to help the Mets snap a four-game losing streak.

The Mets had their highest scoring total since they had 18 at Wrigley Field on Sept. 5, 2010. It was also the most runs the Cubs have allowed since that game.

Murphy hadn't homered since last July 16 but went deep in consecutive innings to notch his first career multihomer game. Davis' four RBIs matched his career high and Hairston had his second career grand slam.

One night after having a 15-game hitting streak snapped, Wright had a sacrifice fly, two-run double and two-run single for his ninth career game of five or more RBIs.

The onslaught made for an easy afternoon for Mets starter Jonathon Niese (6-3), who struck out six and held the Cubs to one run over seven innings. Niese improved to 4-0 with a 1.89 ERA in day games this season.

The Mets' first seven hits went for extra bases, six of them off Cubs starter Jeff Samardzija (5-7). Samardzija also walked four batters and gave up a career-high nine runs in 4 1-3 innings.

He dropped to 0-4 with an 11.29 over his last four starts after going 3-2 with a 2.26 ERA in eight starts from April 24 to June 4.

Casey Coleman fared no better in relief, allowing seven runs in 1 2-3 innings.

The game was tied 1-all through three before New York got 15 runs in the middle innings.

Davis' RBI double and Murphy's two-run homer highlighted a three-run fourth. Davis capped the six-run fifth with a three-run homer, then Hairston's grand slam in the sixth gave New York another six-run inning.

Davis added an eighth-inning double as his last seven hits have gone for extra bases.

One night after stranding 12 runners in a 5-3 loss to Chicago, New York left just three runners on base despite getting 16 hits and drawing seven walks.

NOTES: Mets manager Terry Collins gave OF Kirk Nieuwenhuis the day off Wednesday. The 24-year-old is in a 3-for-26 slide. . Before the game, the Cubs designated RHP Randy Wells for assignment and recalled RHP Rafael Dolis from Triple-A Iowa. Wells has struggled with his control, walking 24 in 28 2-3 innings this season. . The Cubs walked Niese twice and have issued eight free passes to pitchers this season, second-most in the majors to Atlanta's 10.

Good coffee news: Drink helps prevent skin cancer and heart failure ...

Java lovers drink up! Two separate studies released today have found that those who drink coffee have a lower risk of developing the most common kind of skin cancer ? basal cell carcinoma ? and also have a lower risk of heart failure.

The new skin cancer study out of Harvard indicated that decaf coffee did not have the same effect, so researchers attribute the benefit to caffeine. The findings were consistent with published mouse data, which indicate caffeine can block skin tumor formation.

Basal cell carcinoma is the most common form of skin cancer in the United States. ?Given the large number of cases, daily dietary changes having any protective effect may have an impact on public health,? said Jiali Han, associate professor at Brigham and Women?s Hospital, Harvard Medical School in Boston, and author of the study published in Cancer Research, a journal of the American Association for Cancer Research.

Neither coffee nor caffeine consumption were associated with reduced risk of the other forms of skin cancer: squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma.

Han and his colleagues generated their results by looking at data from the Nurses? Health Study and the Health Professionals Follow-up Study, two large long-running studies.

Of the 112,897 participants in the analyses, 22,786 developed basal cell carcinoma during the more than 20 years of follow-up. Researchers observed an inverse association between not only coffee consumption and risk of basal cell carcinoma, but also all dietary sources of caffeine ? including tea, cola and chocolate ? and the cancer.

?Our results add basal cell carcinoma to a list of conditions for which risk is decreased with increasing coffee consumption,? said Han.

Those other conditions include type 2 diabetes, Parkinson?s disease and now heart failure.

A separate study also released today from the American Heart Association?s journal Circulation Heart Failure reported that moderate coffee consumption reduced that deadly condition.

?While there is a commonly held belief that regular coffee consumption may be dangerous to heart health, our research suggests that the opposite may be true,? said Dr. Murray Mittleman, senior study author and director of the cardiovascular epidemiology research at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston.

The heart researchers found that moderate coffee consumption ? defined as two typical coffee shop beverages ? may actually protect against heart failure by as much as 11 percent, he said.

Stonehenge built as a symbol of peace and unity, British researchers suggest

The creation of the mysterious monument and the culture built around it suggests Stonehenge was thought as a symbol of unity in late Neolithic Europe, British researchers say.?

During the monument's construction around 3000 B.C. to 2500 B.C., Britain's Neolithic people were becoming increasingly unified, said study leader Mike Parker Pearson of the University of Sheffield.

"There was a growing islandwide culture ? the same styles of houses, pottery and other material forms were used from Orkney to the south coast," Parker Pearson said in a statement, referring to the Orkney Islands of northern Scotland. "This was very different to the regionalism of previous centuries."

By definition,?Stonehenge?would have required cooperation, Parker Pearson added.

"Stonehenge itself was a massive undertaking, requiring the labor of thousands to move stones from as far away as west Wales, shaping them and erecting them. Just the work itself, requiring everything literally to pull together, would have been an act of unification," he said. [Photos: A Walk Through Stonehenge]

The new theory, detailed in a new book by Parker Pearson, "Stonehenge: Exploring the Greatest Stone Age Mystery" (Simon & Schuster, 2012), is one of many hypotheses about the mysterious monument. Theories range from completely far-fetched (space aliens?or the wizard Merlin built it!) to far more evidence-based (the monument may have been an astronomical calendar, a burial site, or both).

The Culture of Stonehenge

Along with fellow researchers on the Stonehenge riverside Project, Parker Pearson worked to put Stonehenge in context, studying not just the monument but also the culture that created it.

What they found was evidence of a civilization transitioning from regionalism to a more integrated culture. Nevertheless, Britain's Stone Age people were isolated from the rest of Europe and didn't interact with anyone across the English Channel, Parker Pearson said.

"Stonehenge appears to have been the last gasp of this?Stone Age culture, which was isolated from Europe and from the new technologies of metal tools and the wheel," Parker Pearson said.

Stonehenge's site may have been chosen because it was already significant to Stone-Age Britons, the researchers suggest. The natural land undulations at the site seem to form a line between the place where the sun rises on the summer solstice and where it sets in midwinter, they found. Neolithic people may have seen this as more than a coincidence, Parker Pearson said.

Viewing images of high-calorie foods brings on high-calorie cravings, research finds

ScienceDaily (June 25, 2012) ? You're minding your own business when a food craving suddenly hits, and if you just saw an image of a cupcake, or consumed a sugary soda, that may be no accident.

Researchers at the University of Southern California (USC) will present preliminary findings June 26 at the Endocrine Society's annual meeting demonstrating that viewing pictures of high-fat foods and drinking sweetened beverages while viewing the pictures stimulate appetite and reward centers in the brain.

"Studies have shown that advertisements featuring food make us think of eating, but our research looked at how the brain responds to food cues and how that increases hunger and desire for certain foods," said Kathleen Page, principal investigator and assistant professor of clinical medicine at the Keck School of Medicine of USC. "This stimulation of the brain's reward areas may contribute to overeating and obesity, and has important public health implications."

Page's presentation, "Fructose Compared to Glucose Ingestion Preferentially Activates Brain Reward Regions in Response to High-Calorie Food Cues in Young, Obese Hispanic Females," will be made on June 26, during the Endocrine Society meeting, which takes place from July 23 to 26 in Houston, Texas.

Page and colleagues used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to measure the brain responses of 13 obese, Hispanic adolescent women ranging in age from 15 to 25. Women were chosen because prior research indicates they are more responsive to food cues; the study group was narrowed to Hispanic women because of the high risk of obesity and type 2 diabetes in the Hispanic community.

The women's brain responses were scanned twice as they looked at pictures of high-calorie foods, such as hamburgers, cookies, and cakes, and low-calorie foods such as fruits and vegetables. After seeing the high-calorie and low-calorie groupings, the participants rated their hunger and desire for sweet or savory foods on a scale from one to 10.

Halfway through the scans, the women drank 50 grams of glucose -- equivalent to a can of soda -- and another time, they drank 50 grams of fructose. Glucose and fructose are the main components of table sugar and high-fructose corn syrup.

"We hypothesized that the reward areas in the women's brains would be activated when they were looking at high-calorie foods, and that did happen," said Page. "What we didn't expect was that consuming the glucose and fructose would increase their hunger and desire for savory foods."

The researchers also noted that fructose stimulated more hunger and desire in the participants' brains than glucose did.

"Our bodies are made to eat food and store energy, and in prehistoric days, it behooved us to eat a lot of high-calorie foods because we didn't know when the next meal was coming," Page said. "But now we have much more access to food, and this research indicates added sweeteners might be affecting our desire for it."

With many questions unanswered about whether these cravings are environmental (caused by obesity) or genetic, Page plans to study what happens to the brains of obese individuals while they are dieting.
